Jim Parker provided the cargo terminals at LAX with a very high-quality metal primer and finishing paint. Since LAX is so close to the Pacific Ocean, coupled with the fact that latent jet exhaust and nano-sized soot are a bad combination for metal and paint. This particulate matter from aircraft burning JP-4 fuel is ultra-fine, smaller than human hair. In fact, The black nano particulates are 800 times smaller in diameter than a human hair. Likewise, Diesel truck fuel is a kerosene-based composition, very much like jet fuel, and diesel trucks are always left with engines idling, awaiting pick-up or delivery in the area.

When the nano-sized black soot particulates get deposited on the building, it causes the surfaces to break down. Coupled with nightly saturation from salt air and moisture from the nearby beaches due to the prevailing onshore winds. This is a disastrous combination causing rust on the metal and causing the paint to break down on the buildings. Most buildings never get cleaned or washed as a part of regular maintenance, so the paint must be high-quality to withstand the soot and salt combination.

Jim Parker also completed painting the office interiors and warehouses. We painted these at night to better accommodate the airlines. The acoustic panel ceilings were in rough shape, having not been re-painted since the 1960s when everyone was a heavy smoker, so they had deep yellow nicotine stains, which we blocked out with a high-quality primer and paint.
